Joly is unwilling to leave due to the rain, so they all end up staying and missing the funeral, getting drunk instead. Bossuet, sitting out of the window, then sees the rest of the Amis and an assorted rabble who are intent on making a barricade near the wine shop.
Chapter 3 – Everyone is involved with forming the barricades. Grantaire is still drunk, and Enjolras angrily attempts to order him from the barricade. Grantaire sobers up momentarily before falling into an inebriated sleep.

Chapter 2 – An old man, introduced earlier as Father Mabeuf, takes the flag from Enjolras and climbs the barricade to raise it, and is killed in the process. His example of bravery strengths the resolve of the revolution.
Chapter 3 – Distracted by paying their respects to the body of Father Mabeuf, soldiers begin to overrun the barricades. Bahorel throws himself on the first soldier, but is killed a moment later by another. Courfeyrac is knocked to the ground and Gavroche is about to be shot, when Marius arrives, saving both of them.
Chapter 4 – Marius gets the soldiers to retreat by threatening to blow both sides up with gunpowder.
Chapter 5 – Les Amis thank Marius, pleased to be alive. However, when the roll is called, Jean Prouvaire is missing, presumably held captive. Enjolras intends to trade Javert for his return, however before this can happen, they hear sounds of fighting and Prouvaire shouting in support of the revolution, before they hear the sound of a gunshot.
